Integrated component and software development: The example of BSN medical GmbH’s “Curasul®” therapeutic unit

At the same time, this places special demands on the technology employed. Tailored solutions based on standard components by display and microcontroller specialists Garz & Fricke assist in the implementation – as can be seen in the example of the Curasul® therapeutic unit for negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) by BSN medical.

The right “touch” for the right display

Keeping the future demands of easy maintainability and reliable component delivery in mind, BSN medical and CogniMed started searching for modifiable standard devices, a search that eventually led to Garz & Fricke. The “Santino LT” series is optimised for small displays, and could have been created especially for this application. The all-in-one module consists of a 5-inch display with resistive touch interface and associated single-board computer with i.MX6 processor, as well as all the necessary mechanics. The ready-to-install display sports a modern design and is immediately ready for use. Clients face the general choice between resistive and capacitive displays, and each technology brings along specific benefits. Touch-sensitive surfaces with resistive technology offer good handling with gloves and resistance against electromagnetic disturbances and humidity. On the other hand, capacitive touchscreens can handle multi-finger input (multitouch), such as zoom gestures. Moreover, they often feature more robust touch surfaces. However, Curasul did not require extreme durability and multitouch, which is why the decision was made for the Santino LT with resistive display.

Specially modified Linux

CogniMed opted for the Santino because the single-board computer is fitted with a multitude of interfaces while running on an optimised version of Yocto Linux and the graphics framework Qt. Yocto is not a stand-alone system, but rather a modular system with elements that developers can choose from. It above all stands out by its standardised architecture and high degree of customisability. While the use of Yocto met the demands of CogniMed’s developers, the use of Qt was decisive, as one of BSN medical’s demands was the possibility to easily realise extensions in future as well.
